The European Commission proposed to set up the European Cybercrime Centre (ECC), which will protect European citizens and their business against cyber threats. According to statistics, every day nearly one million people become the victims of cyber crime. The damage from these crimes worldwide can be estimated at about $388 billion. Сenter will begin its work in January next year. It will be created as part of Europol, the European police agency headquartered in The Hague. The center’s employees will fight illegal online activities that are carried out by criminal gangs using stolen credit cards and bank accounts. Moreover, according to its founders, the center should facilitate the task of Europol on combating child prostitution, human trafficking, and identity theft and help withstand massive cyber attacks that damage the infrastructure of the European Union.
