Apple’s iPhone 5 was the best-selling smartphone in the world in the fourth quarter of 2012. According to experts, a rich touchscreen design, extensive distribution and generous operator subsidies allowed the gadget to exceed its main competitor - Samsung Galaxy S III. According to their estimates, the number of iPhone 5 shipped globally was 27.4 million in the fourth quarter, allowing the smartphone to increase market share to 13 percent. Apple shipped an estimated 17.4 million iPhone 4S units for 8 percent smartphone share globally in Q4 2012. In turn, the number of Samsung Galaxy S III sold in the world, the experts rated at 15.4 milllion units, and market share - at 7 percent. Note that shipments of iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S accounted for 25 percent of all smartphones sold in the fourth quarter of 2012.
